WORCESTERSHIRE’S winners in the UK Youth Parliament elections will be announced during a special event this weekend.

Young people aged between 11 and 18 have been choosing who they want to represent them in the parliament and 3,600 votes were cast at schools and colleges across the county.

The three successful candidates will be revealed at a Worcestershire youth cabinet and UK Youth Parliament celebration event at county hall on Saturday (March 7) between 2pm and 4pm.

Councillor Liz Eyre, Worcestershire County Council cabinet member for children and families, said: "The youth cabinet provides a platform for our youngsters to ensure that the issues that matter to them are ultimately heard in the House of Commons where many key decisions affecting their lives are made.

“We should all be immensely proud of these young people who give up their time to get involved and campaign for the benefit of their peers.

“I have known many individuals, through this important youth cabinet, develop their skills and confidence over the years, which is equally pleasing."

The event will highlight the achievements of the youth cabinet and UK Youth Parliament which together work to provide young people locally and nationally with a voice and to affect change in their areas.

The occasion will also be marked by a presentation of the first friends of Worcestershire youth cabinet awards. These will recognise the efforts of individuals, organisations and schools who continuously work with and support the youth cabinet in its work.

The awards symbolise a “commitment to listening and responding to the voices of the young people of Worcestershire”, according to Worcestershire County Council.
