GENEROUS salad growers from the Vale are offering the homeless and needy the chance to go and watch this weekend's football match at Evesham United FC between Liverpool legends and Growers United.

Each week Valefresco, based in Offenham, donates salad to the Helping Hands charity which has a soup kitchen in Evesham in the Christian Centre.

Each Monday and Wednesday, community worker Diane Bennett cooks meals at the Christian Centre for those who are down on their luck knowing that they get well fed twice a week.

Brett Pillinger, a volunteer with Helping Hands said they were grateful to Valefresco for donating the salad boxes.

"It is the kindness of companies like them who make all the difference," said Mr Pillinger.

This week, with the charity match on the horizon, Valefresco directors Joe Pilade and Vito Mauro went along with a handful of tickets for the match which they gave out to people as they came through the door.

"We donated around 50 tickets altogether and hope they are able to go along and enjoy the match. This is the third year we have organised the legends matches against the growers in the Vale and it has grown into a well supported event with money we raise being donated to charity. We hope to raise between £20,000 and £30,000 this year which will go to support cancer charities," said Mr Pilade.

He said the first year Growers United played Evesham United and got beaten 14-1. The following year their opponents were West Bromwich Albion legends and reduced the deficit to 9-1. This year they hope to narrow the gap even further against Liverpool's legendary finest which could potentially include the likes of Ian Rush, Phil Neal, Alan Kennedy, Bob Bolder and Ronnie Whelan, and are expecting large crowds and a great atmosphere.

Tickets cost £6 at the Spiers and Hartwell Jubilee Stadium with kick-off at 3.30pm.
