A RECORD-breaking number of youngsters in Wychavon enjoyed fun activities run from a mobile centre in the last school year.

In the last school year 2,136 youngsters aged between eight and 17 used Wychavon District Council’s Youth Bus – up more than 44 per cent on the year before.

The facility, which has now been used more than 4,000 young people since it was launched six years ago, provides a place for youngsters to spend time with their friends, enjoy fun activities and get advice on careers and sexual health as well as drug and alcohol awareness.

It was launched in 2009 to provide leisure activities for youngsters in some of the more isolated parts of Wychavon and was funded by cash from West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner Bill Longmore as well as Worcestershire County Council and others.

It is fitted out with a music centre, mobile broadband and games consoles and was recently refurbished using a £10,000 Disability Adaptations Fund grant, which paid for external lighting, improved folding seating as well as a ramp and grab handles.

Youth Bus and outreach officer with the district council Robin Mace said: “We’re very proud of our Youth Bus and it’s a huge hit with young people which is why it continues to grow in popularity year after year.

“Our aim is to continue that success in future years so even more young people can experience and benefit from what the Youth Bus has to offer.”

The bus is set to get running again next month, visiting locations including Pershore College, Fernhill Heath, Inkberrow, the Littletons, Offenham, Badsey and Great Comberton.

It is available to hire to parish councils, youth groups and community organisations. Visit wychavon.gov.uk/youthbus for more information.
