A TENNIS club in Droitwich is celebrating after netting a considerable cash boost.

Skipton Building Society has served an ace to Droitwich Tennis Club by awarding it £500 through its Grassroots Giving community funding scheme.

Chairman Neil Bates and long-serving member Nigel Hughes recently went along to Skipton's Worcester branch to say thank you for the grant, which will be used to encourage more youngsters in the town to pick up racquets and get involved.

Cleo Welsh, customer review adviser at the Worcester branch, in the Cross, said:“Our Grassroots Giving scheme has this year donated £81,000 to community groups across the country and it was lovely to see a local group benefitting from it. We are very happy that the tennis club won £500, as it is great to support local clubs and help future generations.”

Mr Hughes said: “I’d like to say a big thank you to Skipton Building Society and all the people that voted for us. It is also great that a building society is supporting organisations across the country through Grassroots Giving.

Mr Bates added: “This money is going to provide support for children who may not have been able to play sport.”

Droitwich Tennis Club is run on a voluntary basis and provides eight tennis courts together with a modern club house with changing facilities. The club offers the opportunity for people of all ages to play tennis and become active members of the club.

The club has also forged links with a number of local schools and is providing coaching for pupils from St Peters First School, Chawson First School and Westacre Middle School.

Hundreds of children from Droitwich and the surrounding area have been taught to play tennis and become active members of the community.
