A WOMAN will be flying to India to help tackle child abandonment.

Meg Vincent, from Wadborough, near Worcester, is preparing for her second charity work in the Indian city of Ahmednagar this November to help tackle children abandonment.

The local philanthropist will be flying solo on Tuesday, November 8 and calls everyone to help with raising money for the new orphanage being built by the Snehalaya charity.

The charity works to give emergency response and intensive care, already having housed over 300 children since 2009 but now needs funds for the new project.

She attributes one of the country’s largest problems to the immense cultural difference, saying: "In India, it is socially unacceptable to have children outside of wedlock.

"Such babies are frequently left in the bins or on the streets and it’s completely normal there."

"The charity’s current abandonment centre is overcrowded and runs on a low budget, with only eight nurses being constantly on call as more babies are coming in every day."

Recalling last year’s trip with the University of Leeds students, she said: "I witnessed a baby being adopted from the centre.

"It was amazing, we were all crying.

"This couldn’t be a better cause."

She is trying to raise £1,000 for the cause, double the amount from her last year’s fundraiser.
