EVESHAM United's six-match unbeaten run ended with a 3-2 loss at Shortwood United in Evo-Stik Southern League Division One South and West last night.

The Robins' undefeated away record in the league was also halted as Shortwood leapfrogged their visitors, who dropped to seventh.

Evesham now head for a tough FA Trophy preliminary round test on Saturday at Northern League Division One South side Chasetown, who knocked them out of the FA Cup in August 2-0.

Shortwood hit back from a goal down on 21 minutes after Sean Wood curled a free-kick into the bottom right-hand corner with motionless keeper Tom King seemingly unsighted.

Nick Peare had fouled Nick Stanley, resulting in a yellow card for the Shortwood defender.

Shortwood levelled when Marley Thomas’ cross was headed in by Liam Meredith in the 32nd minute and it remained 1-1 at the break.

Striker Lance Smith went on from the bench for Evesham in the 57th minute and should have given Paul Collicutt’s side the lead from Dan Macdonald’s pass five minutes later but fired over the bar with the goal gaping.

Almost immediately, Shortwood made Evesham pay with Jake Lee touching Thomas’ pass into the net from close range in the 63rd minute.

Joe White then took centre stage, going on as a substitute in the 82nd minute and scoring with his first touch seconds later.

He found himself through on goal with time and space after Nick Humphrey’s free-kick was not dealt with by the visiting defence.

Macdonald saw a low free-kick saved by King low to his left but Evesham did pull one back in the third minute of injury-time when Smith forced the ball over the line from inside the six-yard box.
