A FIFTY-strong field competed over two days in The Vale Golf Club men’s annual championship.

Jeremy Mills carded a gross 80 on day one and 81 in the final round to complete the competition with a winning total of 161.

There were stiff challenges from Stuart Shelley and Tom Robinson, who both finished with 164.

A consolation for Shelley was the nett prize on 146 to beat 2015 champion Adam Flintham by three shots.

The Vale seniors played the fifth and final round of the eclectic competition this year with fine weather and course conditions.

Division One went to Tony Hampson with 40 points ahead of Brian Brumhead on 40, Steve Kirby on 38 and Gerry Clayton on 37.

Mel Locke claimed 42 to win Division Two in front of Brian Sidaway on 39, Stuart Crowther on 39 and David Seagar on 37.

Norman Cannock topped Division Three with 43 followed by Brian Bunn on 37, Mick Hughes on 33 and Andy Castello on 33.

But Brumhead (14 handicap) could not see off Cannock (22), who won the 2016 eclectic competition by two with 54 nett.

Martin Holland (25) was third with 58.

There was a narrow loss for The Vale seniors to Hagley as defeats in the first three pairs were offset by wins for Dave Millard and Geoff Browne 4&2, Mike Roberts and David Viner 2&1 and Rob Sharp and Crowther 2&1.

But victory for the Hagley pair in the final match meant a 4-3 defeat.

The match at Sapey was halved with wins for Jim Rushworth and Millard one-up, Sharp and Martin Westwood one-up, Ian Macrae and Larry Taylor by two holes and Bunn and Tony Perryman by two holes.

Meanwhile, a large field of 77 contested the September medal at Evesham.

Division One saw Will James win on count-back with 67 nett ahead of Stuart Green with Lewis Ridley third on 68 and Michael Haughty fourth on 70.

Bobby Deacon lifted the Rotary Cup and Division Two with 66 in front of Pete Moore on 67, Jim Jones on 68 and Grantham Speake on 70.

The Wychavon Challenge Cup for the seniors went to Ian Tait and Martin Williams with 62 nett to win by six from Geoff Wellens and Jerry Cain.
