Quadzilla win sealed by Steve

MORETON-in-Marsh marathon man Steve Edwards (pictured below left with Roger Hayes) continued his epic feat by winning the gruelling Enigma Quadzilla.

The endurance runner successfully tackled four 26-mile efforts on consecutive days with a total time of 13 hours, 36 minutes and 14 seconds.

Edwards, 49, is now just 25 marathons away from completing 500 in under three hours 30 minutes each.

In the Enigma Quadzilla over 7.5 laps of Caldecotte Lake in Milton Keynes, the Bourton Roadrunners member clocked 3.21.35, 3.24.42, 3.24.22 and 3.25.35.

Edwards admitted: “I never expected to win the event. I was aware of at least two better and younger runners on paper, one who holds the current course record, but he had to withdraw at the last minute due to injury.

“My plan was to just try and be as consistent as possible and, of course, aim to get all four under 3.30 towards my 500 target.

“But, with sub-zero degrees temperatures for most of the event and snow and ice on the course to contend with, conditions were difficult for everybody.

“By day three, I had a 24-minute lead over my closest rival, Roger Hayes from Teignmouth Harriers, which meant that, barring a disaster on my part or a storming run by Roger, the positions wouldn’t change.”

Edwards took the Quadzilla title by 18 minutes in the end as Hayes gained six on him in the final run.
